What Is Direct Access?
As of January 1, 2014, California law states that any person that is interested in receiving physical therapy services are no longer required to see their primary physician first. Physical Therapists are experts in evaluation and treatment of musculoskeletal disorders, and if we are unable to resolve your problem within 12 visits, or 45 days, we will recommend that you visit your doctor for a medical diagnosis. Numerous studies have demonstrated lower healthcare costs and improved outcomes for patients who utilize Direct Access for minor injuries. The same law also states that patients under the care of a physician who owns their physical therapy practice are not required to attend physical therapy at that practice. Physician-owned physical therapy practices have been linked to higher medical costs and unnecessary billing procedures!
Some patients may still need a physician referral in order for insurance to be billed directly, therefore a cash-pay agreement is optimal to obtain these services. This arrangement can also be helpful for those with high deductibles in the beginning of the year! If you are interested, please call our office and our receptionist will be happy to contact your insurance company to check your benefits and find out if they require a physician referral or not.
